The term "gentile" refers to a person who is not Jewish. It comes from the Latin word "gentilis," which means "of or belonging to a tribe or nation." In Jewish tradition, gentiles are considered outsiders to the covenant between God and the Jewish people, and therefore are not bound by the same religious laws and beliefs as Jews. However, the term can also have a derogatory connotation when used to discriminate against non-Jews or to suggest that they are inferior or uncivilized. In contemporary usage, some people may still use the term "gentile" to describe non-Jewish individuals, but it is generally considered more respectful to use other terms such as "non-Jewish" or "non-Jew."
